“Ranks among Wener Herzog’s finest. Suggests a cinematic equivalent of Truman Capote’s masterwork 'In Cold Blood.'” — Screen International

“Extraordinary.” — The New York Times

“Stunning.” — The Wall Street Journal

“Four Stars.” — Roger Ebert

In his fascinating exploration of a triple homicide case in Conroe, Texas, master filmmaker Werner Herzog (CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, GRIZZLY MAN) probes the human psyche to explore why people kill—and why a state kills. As he’s so often done before, Herzog’s investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

TFA, Ulrich Museum present first Special Screening of the year: INCIDENT IN NEW BAGHDAD, with Director, Subject

TFA and Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum of Art will present an encore screening of the 2011 Tallgrass Film Festival’s Audience Award winning short film, INCIDENT IN NEW BAGHDAD on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Murdock Theater, 526 N. Broadway. Since screening at TFF, the film has been shortlisted for an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short Subject. Both the film’s Director James Spione, and Wichita resident and Subject Ethan McCord will attend the screening and participate in a conversation and Q&A with the Wichita Eagle’s Ron Sylvester. A reception will follow from 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 GA; $8 students, teachers, seniors, military and WSU staff; and free for Tallgrass Film Association Members and Ulrich Museum members.

KMUW is media sponsor for the event, which is also sponsored by the Peace and Social Justice Center of South Central Kansas, Murdock Theater, WSU College Democrats and the WSU Young Democratic Socialists.

INCIDENT IN NEW BAGHDAD is a compelling film that focuses on McCord, former U.S. Army Specialist, the subject of a 2007 Wikileaks controversy, who witnessed one of the most notorious incidents of the Iraq War — the slayings of two Reuters journalists and a number of other unnamed civilians by U.S. attack helicopters in Iraq.

Director James Spione returns to Wichita to kickoff 2012 Tallgrass Filmmakers Lab

The 2012 Tallgrass Filmmakers Lab workshops debut on Feb. 11 with Making and Marketing An Independent Film in the Digital Age, led by award-winning Director James Spione, whose latest film INCIDENT IN NEW BAGHDAD is shortlisted for a 2012 Academy Award nomination. Spione’s first short film earned him a Student Academy Award.

Following the extraordinary trajectory of this award-winning film, Spione reveals how the power of 21st-century social media has radically transformed the creation, marketing and distribution of independent film. By comparing his previous filmmaking experience before the emergence of today's online tools, Spione's candid presentation will offer a rare and detailed behind-the-scenes look at how the interconnected power of Facebook, Twitter and Kickstarter, in conjunction with established venues like film festivals and television, helped bring his latest film from his home editing suite to an international stage

The class will be held at the Wichita Art Museum in the Howard Wooden Lecture Hall from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Advanced registration is $20 for general admission; $15 for students, teachers, military, seniors and TFA Members. Admission is $25 at the door.
